Minister Search Committee May 17, 2020
The last update from the Search Committee to the congregation was read during the service on Sunday, May 3rd. Later in the same week the update was distributed via e-mail and posted on our website.
As of May 14, we have received (33) Ministerial Profiles. (2) candidates are scheduled for third interviews. (1) candidate is scheduled for a second interview. (2) newer candidates are under review. (3) candidates have withdrawn from the process, which leaves a total of (28) candidates no longer under consideration.
By the time candidates complete their second interview, we have a portfolio of information for each of them upon which their status is determined. Third interviews are scheduled to fill in gaps in information and to dive deeper into areas of potential concern. We draw on the following resources to build a candidate’s portfolio:
(a) Ministerial Profile (MP) and the corresponding spreadsheet with numerical ratings, reached by comparing the information in the MP to the established criteria based on South Church’s Profile, Survey, and Summaries
(b) Overall evaluation of the candidate from each committee member, also based on MP
(c) Notes from first, second, and third interviews with corresponding debriefing spreadsheets rating the candidate’s responses numerically plus an overall impression of the candidate
(d) Any additional information about or from the candidate such as videos, newspaper articles, sermons, etc.
The committee has been validating steps going forward with the UCC Conference and with our own Central Board as appropriate.
Three or more times a week we Zoom in to meet. While we value this efficient and effective platform, it cannot replicate in-person, shared experiences, where a look, a touch on the arm, or a smile can speak volumes and alter a moment. With Zoom, communication and team dynamics at times require an extra dose of attention. Consequently, our search team has devoted the extra time and effort needed to maintain effective team dynamics.
We will continue to follow our communication schedule to update the congregation on Sunday every two weeks.
Opening and closing prayers inform our time together. Recently, we felt the need for a unison prayer and prayed in unison together for the first time since we moved to Zoom. Although the Lord’s Prayer sounded a little bit like a round at times, it felt wonderful to lift up our words to God with one voice.
Please take time to pray for our church’s journey to a settled minister. As each of our individual voices blend together as one community, South Church will experience God’s amazing Grace.
May calm and wellness be yours,
South Church Search Committee
