Words from the Minister

Lent – from the German root for ‘long’ –‘lenz’ and the Dutch ‘lente’ recognizing for those of us in the northern hemisphere, the days are becoming longer. Lent is a time set aside by the early church, six weeks in length, to prepare ourselves spiritual for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Such is at the very core of our faith and thus calls for an adequate time of preparation. While often the practice is to ‘give something up’, in recent years Christians have been ‘taking something on’ as part of their spiritual rebirth as spring makes it way to our land. For some, keeping a journal becomes a place of reflection and for others it takes the form of volunteering with a food program, classroom setting, the church or other endeavor. The form in which it may take is not crucial, the fact that we do something that feeds our hearts is compelling.

This year, we will offer a book group for five Wednesdays at 6:30pm; Love Wins by Rob Bell. Our first session will be on February 29 at the church. If this might speak to you, come and join this time of faith exploration.

Ash Wednesday to mark the beginning of Lent is February 22. We will join with other Kennebunkport churches for worship together; this year at Church on the Cape at 7:00pm.

Greetings from Biloxi

A group of twenty-one youth and adults from South Church spent a week in January working to rebuild houses in Bioloxi, Mississippi which were destroyed by hurricane Katrina in 2005. For a complete summary of their week, click here.
