I left for the airport to come to Biloxi MS
and Back Bay Mission less than 24 hours after the shocking
news began to break out of Boston. It brings a host of feelings;
disgust, anger, compassion, disbelief, helplessness, heroic
responses to the hell that was unleashed on earth. I hold
in my prayers the tender loss of many lives and such serious
injuries, and what will be just the beginning of long term
fear and repercussions from this act.
We must commit ourselves once again to be people
of compassion and care, of kindness and a resilient faith
even when we do not comprehend. Events like this push us to
our God believing limits. Yet we still look to God for guidance
in these twisted times of senseless violence as we struggle
in the shadows to take the next step.
My prayers join your prayers for all those impacted
by the Boston Marathon violence and recognition of those who
responded without hesitation to the needs of their sisters
and brothers on the street when help was desperately needed.
They are the quiet unsung heros who inspire us in the midst
of despair. They are the ones through whom God is working,
and in these times we need everyone of us to carry the load
and carry the light.

South Church Celebrates 175th
Anniversary
On January 10, 1838, 70 women and men, along with Pastor
Levi Smith, made the 1 ½ mile trip from First
Congregational Church south to a new church along the
shore of the Kennebunk River. In 2013, we members of
South Congregational Church proudly celebrate our 175th
Anniversary 175 years of worship, service, teaching
and outreach to our congregation, the Kennebunks, and
our wider community. South Church has played a vital
role in our personal lives and in the lives of those
we reach through our many and varied activities. In
2013, we shall celebrate!
While discussions by the 175th Anniversary Committee
are ongoing, we do have some initial plans in place
for the year of celebration.
